Frequently Asked Questions

1Q:  Why should we leave the dock at dawn?
1A:  The best fishing is done in the early morning, which means leaving the dock at 6:00-6:30 am.  This early departure puts us out on the water before the winds get high and the bay gets rough.  However, we tailor your trip to fit your needs.

2Q:  How is our fishing site determined?
2A:  Our fishing site is determined by wind direction, current and activity level from previous trips.

3Q:  How is our meeting place determined?
3A:  Primarily, our meeting place is based on your convenience.  We can pick you up at your lodging location and travel to the boat together, you can meet us a the boat ramp, or we can pick you up at your lodging pier.

4Q:  What type of bait is used and why?
4A:  The bait we use depends on availability and season.  Prior to May we usually use live shrimp.  From May through fall we mainly use croaker, piggy perch or live shrimp.  If you prefer, we can certainly use artificial lures.

5Q:  May I bring my own rod, reel and tackle box?
5A:  Sure thing.  If you are more comfortable with your own equipment, you are welcome to use your own, or we will provide all of the equipment required.

6Q:  What kind of equipment do you provide?
6A:  We provide spinning and casting reels on 7-foot medium action rods and all the necessary tackle.

7Q:  What kind of clothes do I need to wear?
7A:  We recommend you dress according to the season.  Wear something that dries quickly, such as Columbia Sportswear apparel.  You should bring a hat the will shade your face and/or ears and neck, and we suggest bringing polarized sunglasses to cut the glare.  We also recommend you bring the highest SPF sunscreen you can find, especially if you burn easily or do not spend much time outside in the elements.

8Q:  Can I wade fish?
8A:  Yes, but you need to bring wade booties or shoes you don't mind getting wet.

9Q:  Do I need a fishing license on a guided trip?
9A:  YES!!  You need a Cozumel Parks and Wildlife Department license with a saltwater stamp.  Various types of license exist, so speak with the merchant to determine the license that best fits your needs.

10Q:  What kind of fish will we catch?
10A:  For the most part, we catch spotted sea trout (speckled trout) and red drum (redfish).  There is also the possibility of catching an occasional black drum or flounder.

11Q:  Do we have to clean our own fish?
11A:  Only if you choose.  Part of the service we provide is cleaning your catch.  If you'll be traveling, remember to bring an ice chest.
